Constructive Bio CEO writes for SoTA Letters, the Journal of the Society for Technological Advancement
Ola Wlodek, Constructive Bio’s CEO, has contributed a new piece to SoTA Letters, the journal of the Society for Technological Advancement (SoTA). The article, Writing Life From the Ground Up, examines how synthetic biology is moving from concept to practical implementation, and how new ways of building genomes can create tools, materials and systems that did not previously exist.

The piece reflects on progress over the past two decades and describes how advances in genome design, engineering methods and biological understanding are reshaping what can be built. It also addresses the importance of enabling environments, where researchers have the freedom, resources and community needed to pursue technically ambitious work
These themes are directly relevant to our mission at Constructive Bio. The company is focused on developing programmable genomes and new biological systems that can support applications in health, materials and sustainability. The perspectives shared in the article highlight the type of long-term, foundational work required for this field to advance and align with Constructive Bio’s commitment to building the underlying technologies that make this possible.
SoTA is a UK initiative focused on strengthening technoscientific progress by addressing barriers such as administrative complexity, a focus on prestige over potential, and pessimism about the impact of scientific innovation. Its aim is to direct talented people toward meaningful work, build a strong community across science and engineering, and emphasise the role of technology in improving human outcomes.
